Letter from the President

Hello Friends,

This is a very exciting issue of our Friends of Theater newsletter.  You are not going to want to miss the links to some incredible student productions and performances.  It is so uplifting to see what our Mason students are still creating in these very unusual and difficult circumstances for the performing arts.  It gives great hope for the future.

The Friends Board has been busy, too.  Our newsletter is now under the very able direction of Norma Reck who has taken on the job with gusto.  If you have ever met Norma, you know that when she takes on a job she really gets things done.  Look for some new features as we get further into the season.  In these socially distant times our Newsletter becomes an even more important means of uniting us in our common goal of support for the School of Theater.  We also have welcomed Sherry Watkins to the Board.  You may remember that Sherry was to host a very special fundraising event for our Musical Theater program at her home featuring Broadway star Lisa Vroman which was shut down by Covid-19.  Now we are thrilled that she is bringing her enthusiasm, organizing experience, ideas, and can-do spirit to Friends of Theater.

Scholarship application time is quickly approaching.  Friends of Theater scholarships are awarded each year for the spring semester which is why we need a healthy fundraising push right now.  If you have not sent a contribution to Friends of Theater this year, now would be the critical time.  It would also be a wonderful time to increase your contribution.  The needs of our students this year are even greater as many of their part time jobs are gone.

I hope many of you were able to see the first student production of the year, Hookman, directed by Julia Rudgers.  It had a fabulous cast and the use of technology to make the scenes realistic was really impressive.  Kudos to all involved.

We will see you in the theater again.  In the meantime, stay safe.
